Ledbury Hunt Pictures

Many of you will have seen Viki Ross following the Ledbury over the last few years.  Viki has had the permission of the Masters to take photographs of the Hunt and these can be accessed by clicking on the link below.

Viki has kindly said that any proceeds from the sale of her photographs will be given to the hunt less her own expenses.

So please do take a look at the many photos she has taken over the years.

Ledbury Hunt Win at

Herefordshire Country Fair

A team from the Ledbury Hunt won the Inter-Hunt jumping at the Herefordshire Country Fair at the end of August.  Facing stiff competition from twelve other packs, including two from the South Pembrokeshire the Ledbury Hunt team of Nickie Sheppard, Anna Bird, Pete Finch and Jack Harper came home with the Trophy!  They very sportingly donated their winnings to Ledbury Hunt funds.

Ledbury Hunt Puppy Show

Tuesday, 26th June 2007

The annual Puppy Show is without doubt the highlight of the Hunt’s summer and as always the Kennels looked in immaculate good order.

Despite June being one of the wettest months on record, the weather on the day remained fine.  As always it was a great pleasure to visit the Kennels, see hounds, meet a lot of old friends and admire the new entry.

The young hounds were judged this year by Mr Luke Neale MFH (Puckeridge) and Patrick Martin (Huntsman of the Bicester with Whadon Chase).  There were one couple of doghounds and five couple of bitches.

RESULTS

Doghounds

1st        Godfrey          walked by Mr D Haden

2nd       Bruiser            walked by Mrs W May

Bitches

1st        Gossip            walked by Miss T Warner

2nd       Brittle              walked by Mrs W May

3rd        Boozy             walked by Miss M Green

Judging the best dog hound against the best bitch resulted in the Nimrod Champion Memorial Trophy going to Miss Trudy Warner for walking Gossip, with Gossip’s full brother Godfrey, walked by Mr Donald Haden being placed as Reserve Champion.

The best working dog hound from the 2006 entry was Saladin walked by Mrs G Young.  This hound was placed first dog hound at last year’s Puppy Show, as well as being Champion hound in 2006.  The prize for the best working bitch went to Mrs P Jeynes who walked Manikin.

The Hound Sponsors’ Tankard went to the Jones family children, Jack, Miranda and Harry, who had sponsored Hearty ’05.  This bitch has been identified by our Huntsman, John Holliday, as the best working hound from the whole pack irrespective of age.  The amount raised by the hound sponsors this last season was £1500.00 and a cheque for this amount was presented to our Hunt Secretary, Helen Smith.

As always the ladies of the hunt provided a wonderful tea afterwards following which the older hounds were brought out for everyone to admire.  They all looked in magnificent condition – a great credit to the Joint Masters and of course in particular to the hunt staff for all their effort and hard work.

HMS LEDBURY

It was with enormous pleasure on the 5th July 2007 that we were able to welcome the Officers and crew of HMS Ledbury to the Hunt Kennels.

The ship is a Hunt Class minesweeper named after the Ledbury Hunt.

After spending some time admiring the hounds we held a question and answer session in the Valet Room and it was encouraging to see how much interest and support there was coming from a group of people most of whom had never seen a pack of hounds and knew very little about hunting.

Lt Commander Paul Russell, the ship’s Captain, very kindly presented us with a wooden plaque displaying the ship’s official badge consisting of two hunting horns crossed with a cutlass mounted on a background of hunt coat colours of red and chocolate brown.

We were pleased to be able to present them (thanks to the generosity of our Supporters’ Club) with a selection of Ledbury Hunt polo and sweat shirts.  They also went away with 24 large bottles of cider generously given to us by Westons Cider Company of Much Marcle.  For the Officers’ Ward Room we presented the Captain with a bottle of Hereford Gin.

LEDBURY HUNT

HOUND SPONSORS’ SCHEME

Many thanks to all those supporters who so kindly sponsored hounds in the 2006-2007 season.

The winning hound was Hearty ’05 sponsored by the Jones family children – Jack, Miranda and Harry.

The total raised by the hound sponsors this year was £1500.00 and a cheque for this amount was presented at the Puppy Show on 26th June to our Hunt Secretary, Helen Smith.

We will be starting the 2007-2008 scheme in November/December 2007 when application forms will be posted to all last season’s sponsors.  For anyone who did not sponsor a hound last season and now wishes to do so please telephone me on 01531 890344, email donald@donaldhaden.com or download a form off the website nearer the time.

Nick Ross Ledbury Hunt Falconer

I have been a falconer for the past 26yrs, having flown many different types of birds including Common Buzzards, Owls, Lanner Falcon, Peregrine Saker, Redtailed Buzzard and Jess my Harris Hawk, Which most of you who take part in the Ledbury Hunt will know.
I came to meet the legendary Richard Leeke whilst on a mercy plea to fly on his Longdon estate, i there after was given permission to fly on a lot of the Ledbury country and got to know many of the partakers of the Ledbury Hunt.
In August of 2005 i was asked as a supporter of all types of hunting to help out and became the Falconer for the Ledbury Hunt.
I soon decided that i was not happy walking  with Jess and decided to learn to ride. After some words of wisdom from all at Manor Farm and riding lesson from Peter Finch i went on my first hunt some 6 hours later.
Then in January 2006 i bought Pride a 17.2h Irish Draught Mare who had decided from the start that she was in charge and continued to prove this on a daily basis by putting me on the floor and trotting back to her stable. But we got there in the end and i decided to better it all by riding on the hunt with Jess my Harris Hawk. So we now regularly ride with the Ledbury Hunt and attempt to jump everything i can including double fences.
It is believed that i am the only falconer on horseback with a hawk that rides for a hunt but what an adventure it has been and no amount of fences Pride, Jess and i jump can compare to the life long friends we have made along the way and would like to thank all those that have helped and guided me along, you know who you are!
